When I first came to Embrace Physio I could barely walk. Crippling back pain and sciatica meant that I found it hard to get around, never mind play any sport. Thanks to these incredibly professional and friendly specialists I have made a full recovery. I suffer no pain and I’m even back on the five-a-side pitch! Thank you. Matt Bailey, Breakfast Presenter, Capital FM

About us – The Embrace Physiotherapy team

Matt Denby – Senior Physiotherapist, BSc, MCSP, PGCMatt Denby

A specialist musculoskeletal and rheumatology physiotherapist with over 12 years of experience working within the NHS and private clinics, providing manual therapy and hands on treatment. Since graduating from Sheffield Hallam University with BSc Hons’ in physiotherapy Matt has worked in a variety of settings within the field of musculoskeletal physiotherapy; including GP practices, sports injury clinics, musculoskeletal departments, A&E, fracture clinics and plastics dressing clinic.

Matt followed this BSc with a Postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Musculoskeletal Clinical Practice, achieving commendation. He has completed diagnostic imaging training and forged links to both Nuffield Health and Rutherford Health where he can refer for medical imaging as required. He recently has worked alongside rheumatology specialists and expanded his skills repertoire within this specialism. Combining his expertise in MSK with rheumatology and developing management skills for chronic pain has helped enhance his diagnostic and management skills.

Matt is committed to continue to develop himself as a specialist physiotherapist, as well as looking to drive evidence based practice within the profession and has recently taken on a role as a champion for the North East Musculoskeletal Society; working alongside fellow like-minded physiotherapists across the region to provide opportunities for continued professional development. Recent course attendance includes Pain Management; Various Sporting injury courses; Management of the painful knee; Blood test interpretation; and he has completed a foundation course in acupuncture.

Matt sees his next step in his development as furthering his skills as an extended scope practitioner by completing his injection therapy qualifications.

Outside of physiotherapy Matt is a bit of a fitness fanatic. As a keen footballer, Matt played at various levels in the North of England and Scotland. He has recently hung his boots up due to the time constraints of juggling work; a demanding sport and his three young boys. Instead he has turned to road cycling and running. His love of sport has been a driving factor in his development of analysis of sporting injuries and the dynamics of movement, which helps to guide his assessment.

Naomi Denby – Senior Physiotherapist, BSc, MCSP, PGC

Naomi Denby

Naomi has worked as a musculoskeletal specialist physiotherapist for 10 years and has acquired expertise in exercise rehabilitation and hands-on manual therapy working with patients with varying musculoskeletal conditions.

Since graduating in 2007, Naomi has continued to further expand her skills and knowledge through regular CPD as has completed numerous training courses over the years including the Foundation Acupuncture Course in 2011 and she achieved Postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Musculoskeletal Clinical Practice at Northumbria University in 2012.

She has completed part 1 and 2 of the Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute (APPI) Matwork series which has enabled her to offer 1:1 pilates sessions and to set up and run classes under the APPI accreditation. She is working towards completing part 3 and the exam to become a fully certified APPI Pilates instructor later this year.

Outside of physiotherapy Naomi tries to squeeze in keeping up her badminton skills, having previously represented England at youth level; and practices pilates herself as she personally found it very beneficial ante/postnatally. She often incorporates factors of her pilates background into her treatments believing that core strength is imperative to injury prevention, rehabilitation and achieving high levels of function. What to expect – Visiting the clinic

The initial assessment will last 30 minutes and involve a detailed discussion and specific questioning regarding the presenting complaint to enable the physiotherapist to gain a comprehensive understanding of the problem you are currently having and previous complaints from the past.

This is then followed by an objective examination with assessment of range of movement, testing of various structures and palpating to identify any areas of stiffness and tenderness. Throughout the assessment the therapist will be explaining the findings and a discussion will follow with regard to formulating an appropriate treatment and management plan.

In order to gain the most information possible it may be necessary to wear appropriate clothing to allow the physiotherapist access to the area of injury/ problem. For example to fully assess the neck then removal of shirts/ tops  may be necessary therefore a vest top may be more comfortable for you to wear; and for back and lower limb examinations it is often necessary to access the area, therefore shorts may be more appropriate.

Time to change will be given prior to the assessment; however if you do not wish to remove all clothing then we will do our utmost to work around any specific requirements as we are able.

Frequently Asked Questions – Help and advice

What is a Chartered Physiotherapist?

All therapists are chartered physiotherapists and are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP). This means that the physiotherapist has gained a degree in physiotherapy by completing theoretical, practical and clinical training. It also means they adhere to a code of conduct and are safe to practice physiotherapy.

What do treatments involve?

Treatments can include the following:

  • Mobilisation and manipulation of the joints and tissues
  • Exercise therapy to mobilise and strengthen weakened or inactive muscles
  • Electrical treatments (electrotherapy) including ultrasound and interferential therapy
  • Trigger point acupuncture for pain conditions
  • Advice on return to exercise and resumption of sporting activities
  • Advice on pacing activities and ergonomic strategies for upper limb disorders

Measures to prevent recurrence often include reviewing or revising training programmes in the case of sports injuries and looking at work related ergonomic factors such as the patients posture and general work area.

Do I need a referral?

No, chartered physiotherapists are trained to assess and treat multiple complaints and musculoskeletal conditions. If we think that we would benefit from more information or feel further investigations are required we would request that you contact your GP.

How quickly can I be seen?

We aim to be as flexible as possible and endeavour to see you as soon as possible within the working hours of the clinic. If there is a difficulty due to the times available we also provide home visits.

How much does it cost?

Initial assessments and follow-up treatments are priced at £30.00.

How long does treatment last?

Each session will last approximately 30 minutes.

Will it hurt?

Some treatment can be uncomfortable but at no stage should you be unable to tolerate the level of discomfort. Your physiotherapist will give you clear guidelines on what to expect during and after treatment and what is a normal reaction.

How many sessions will I need?

This  depends on factors such as how long the problem has been present, the severity of the condition and also the requirements of the patient. For example, a person wishing to get back to training for a specific sport or event will typically require a longer course of treatment than a sedentary office-worker.

Can I attend for private physiotherapy whilst on the NHS waiting list?

Yes, we are happy to provide treatment whilst you await your NHS appointment and pass on information regarding treatment when your appointment comes through.

What do I need to wear?

To obtain an accurate diagnosis and to treat the problem appropriately we are usually required to see the affected areas. We recommend a loose and comfortable fitting top for upper limb, shoulder, neck and back problems and shorts for any problems presented in your lower back and legs. It is advisable to bring trainers should they be required for rehabilitation.

Can I bring someone with me?

You are more than welcome to bring a friend or family member with you to your appointment and they can sit in on the consultation and treatment with you if you wish.

What if I need to cancel my appointment?

If you are unable to attend your appointment then please inform us as soon as possible. Failure to attend without prior notice or cancellation less than 12 hours in advance may result in you still being charged for the treatment.

Can I attend following orthopaedic surgery?

Yes, our clinicians have a wealth of experience in post operative rehabilitation and will request any information they require from your orthopaedic consultant to enable safe progression of treatment. We will maintain communication with your consultant throughout the rehabilitation process to ensure we can notify them of your progress.

Do you arrange contracts with companies and businesses?

Yes, we currently have affiliations with some local sports clubs and businesses, and are always to expand our contacts and establish further links to the local community.

Do you do home visits?

Yes, if you prefer us to visit or would find attending the clinic difficult then we can arrange an appointment to come to you. The price per visit is £50 (with mileage rates applied for visits over 5 miles from the clinic).
